About the Exhibition
Brother and Sister Dom and Ollie Barrington have been rising in the early cold mornings of winter to photograph the region in the pre-dawn light. The light at this time of day in winter, is crisp, clean, gentle, and casting a magical glow over the landscapes of the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.
From Source to Sea challenges us to focus on the journey that just one drop of water takes from sky to sea. As we are all aware of the precious nature of water, we have used this exhibition to capture beautiful images of the region, enhanced by the impact of water.
Our images have an uncluttered elegance, where we let the beauty, peace and tranquility of the spectacular Illawarra and Shoalhaven landscapes speak clearly - without the need for clever tricks or artifice. Our images provide different perspectives of the Illawarra and Shoalhaven region, from the grand landscapes to light reflecting of water off sand ripples. We are so fortunate to live in an environment that is as spectacular as it is.
Working as brother and sister on an exhibition has been rewarding, revealing and challenging. It has been interesting to observe how our different life experiences reveal themselves in the images we capture. Dom’s work in the exploration and mining industry is reflected in his passion for grand vistas, big skies and structure, yet his work flow is very chaotic and unstructured. Ollie’s images are influenced by her many years in Asia, taking delight in capturing the joy in the abstract landscape, whilst her work flow is very structured and organised. We are fortunate that we both have a similar aesthetic which we display differently, but we set high standards in terms of the quality and uniqueness of our images. Being brother and sister lends itself to an honesty in discussion over the images which can be described as robust to say the least.
The exhibition runs from the 2nd to the 7th of November 2005 at the “Old Fire Station” Terralong Street Kiama, look for the Cow out the Front. Dom and Ollie will be at the Gallery from early to late, and take great delight in talking about the images and how we captured them.
